Cognitive Dissonance (CD) is a psychological term describing the
uncomfortable tension that may result from having two conflicting thoughts
at the same time, or from engaging in behaviour that conflicts with one's
beliefs, or from experiencing apparently conflicting phenomena.

In simple terms, it can be the filtering of information that conflicts with
what you already believe, in an effort to ignore that information and
reinforce your beliefs.

In detailed terms, it is the perception of incompatibility between two
cognitions, where "cognition" is defined as any element of knowledge,
including attitude, emotion, belief, or behaviour.

Cognitive Dissonance is a real thing, in the sense that it is robustly
supported by empirical evidence: it is the intellectual stress that a
person encounters when they perceive an inconsistency between their
beliefs, or between a set of beliefs and their actions. This stress leads
humans to reliably act in various ways such as confirmational bias and
causal self justifications that we would normally consider to be quite
irrational, but which are correctly predicted by Cognitive Dissonance
theory as an attempt to reduce dissonance.

In A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance (1957), Leon Festinger proposed that
human beings strive for internal psychological consistency in order to
mentally function within the real world. A person who experiences internal
inconsistency tends to become psychologically uncomfortable, and so is
motivated to reduce the cognitive dissonance, by making changes to justify
the stressful behaviour, either by adding new parts to the cognition
causing the psychological dissonance, or by actively avoiding social
situations and contradictory information likely to increase the magnitude
of the cognitive dissonance.

Such theory of cognitive dissonance states that contradicting cognitions
serve as a driving force that compels the mind to acquire or invent new
thoughts or beliefs, or to modify existing beliefs, so as to reduce the
amount of dissonance (conflict) between cognitions.

Experiments have attempted to quantify this hypothetical drive.

Some of these have examined how beliefs often change to match behaviour
when beliefs and behaviour are in conflict.

The reduction of the psychological stress of any experience as cognitive
dissonance is a function as to the magnitude of the dissonance caused by
the existential inconsistency, between two contradictory beliefs held by
the person; or by the contradiction between the person's beliefs and an
action they have taken. Two factors determine the degree of psychological
dissonance caused by two conflicting cognitions or by two conflicting
actions:

- The importance of cognitions: The greater the personal value of the
elements, the greater the magnitude of the dissonance in the relation.
- Ratio of cognitions: The proportion of dissonant-to-consonant elements.

And an inability to reduce dissonance is not necessarily a good thing, as
it is linked to depression and PTSD in extreme cases. However, these forces
lead to an escalation of sorts if the person allows them to run unchecked,
as we witness so often in disputes between countries, companies, and in our
personal lives (think of the animosity between many couples getting a
divorce).

Andreas Demetriou's theory (one of the neo-Piagetian theories of cognitive
development) used the term hypercognition to refer to self-monitoring,
self-representation, and self-regulation processes, which are regarded as
integral components of the human mind. Moreover, with his colleagues, he
showed that these processes participate in general intelligence, together
with processing efficiency and reasoning, which have traditionally been

Metacognition can take many forms; it includes knowledge about when and how

Metacognologists believe that the ability to consciously think about

self-questioning (e.g. "What do I already know about this topic? How have I
solved problems like this before?"), thinking aloud while performing a

physical act of writing plays a large part in the development of

Metacognitive-like processes are especially ubiquitous when it comes to the

discussion of metacognition is a salient feature of self-critical and
self-regulating social groups.

Metamemory, defined as knowing about memory, memetic and mnemonic

In the time of the Roman Empire (17 BC – 476 AD) the lower classes had
"free" marriages. The bride's father would deliver her to the groom, and
the two agreed that they were wed, and would keep the vow of marriage by
mutual consent. Wealthy Romans, though, would sign documents listing
property rights to publicly declare that their union was legalized and not
a common law marriage. This was the beginning of the official recording of
marriage:

The most important part of a Catholic wedding is what is commonly known as
the exchange of vows. These words are the heart—the essential element—of
the sacrament of marriage; they form the covenant that establish the
couple’s marriage. The Church calls the exchange of vows consent—that is,
the act of will by which a man and a woman give themselves to each other,
and accept the gift of the other. The marriage can’t happen without the

It's ideal if you memorize the words of consent; doing so emphasizes that
your consent to be married is truly heartfelt. Memorizing the words of
consent in the weeks and months leading up to the wedding is also a good
spiritual practice that will help you to focus on the deeper meaning of
your marriage.

If you're worried about forgetting the words, or being too emotional to say
them clearly, many priests and deacons will have you repeat the words of
consent after them, phrase by phrase. The Order for Celebrating Matrimony
doesn't actually suggest this, though; instead, it offers this simple
alternative:

PRIEST: (Name), do you take (name) to be your wife? Do you promise to be
faithful to her in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to
love her and to honor her all the days of your life?

GROOM: I do.

The priest acknowledges that the couple have declared their consent to be
married, prays for God's blessing on the couple, and declares, "What God

The Blessing and Exchange of Rings follows the declaration of consent.
Again, it is ideal for the bride and groom to memorize these prayers. The
priest says a blessing over the wedding rings (The Order of Celebrating
Matrimony #66) and then the couple exchange wedding rings (#67A):

Ik heb hier al verschillende keren aangevoerd dat de USA zich bewust
heeft gemodelleerd naar het romeinse rijk, of liever: de romeinse
republiek. Zou nu het ogenblik gekomen zijn dat we de omslag van
rpubliek naar keizerrijk meemaken?
Nee.  Over twee jaar zijn er gewoon weer presidentsverkiezingen.
De campagne is zelfs al begonnen en de NYT en CNN zijn dagelijks
aan het liegen in de hoop meer votes voor democrats los te weken.
                                   En is dat Goed of Slecht (TM)?
Logisch beschouwd geen van beide en allebei.  Trump is op normale
wijze gekozen door de burgers van de USA.  In de USA worden zelfs
locoburgemeesters en brandweerchefs door de burgers gekozen.  Ook
hebben ze er nog de doodstraf, omdat de meeste burgers van de USA
dat willen.
Liever geen reacties van de nitwits die niets anders kunnen dan hier
de columns van Elsevier of DDS hier  neerplempen.
Probeer het eens van de positieve kant te bekijken.  Geplempte
columns besparen je juist kostbare tijd omdat de 'nitwits' de
meeste voor nl.politiek irrelevante BS eruit filteren.

Reultaten uit het verleden bieden geen garantie voor de toekomst. Als we
naar het romeinse rijk kijken, zie je dat de burgers daar ook op hun
achterste benen gingen staan als iemand dreigde buiten de verkiezingen
om een of ander ambt te bemachtigen, en dat Caesar 'koninklijke' trekjes
begon te vertonen heeft hem ook de das omgedaan.
Zelfs de vroege keizers, te beginnen met Octavianus, probeerden uit alle
macht de schijn van een republiek met verkiezingen en alles op te houden.
Overigens is ook in de US het winnen van een verkiezing doorgaans een
kwestie van eer meer geld tegenaan smijten dan de tegenstander, en de
marges zijn slechts enkele procenten of zelfs minder.
Ik moet altijd vermoeid glimlachen als iemand daar roept "Het volk heeft
gekozen".
