HELL PIZZA UNDER FIRE OVER SEXUAL ASSAULT PRANK
16 August, 2012
A Rape Crisis Agency says it's up to the public
to decide whether or not to accept an apology
made by controversial company Hell Pizza.
The pizza company is in the firing line today
over a post on its Facebook page making light
of sexual assault. Wellington Rape Crisis Manager
Natalie Gousmett says a $10,000 donation to the
Agency from Hell Pizza is appreciated, but ultimately
it's up to the public to accept or decline the
company's apology. She says those directly affected
by the incident described on Facebook are the ones
who'll have to decide whether to ask more from
RAPE CRISIS ACCEPTS HELL PIZZA OFFER
16 August, 2012
Hell Pizza has made a $10,000 donation to
Wellington Rape Crisis centre. Wellington Rape Crisis
has agreed to accept a $10,000 donation from Hell Pizza
as the company seeks to quell accusations it made light
of a sexual assault. The controversial pizza company
was hit with a wave of criticism last night after it
announced the winner of its 'Confessional' competition
on Facebook. Its winning entry described an incident
of sexual abuse where the confessor put his penis in
the mouth of a drunk man who had passed out. Hundreds
of people expressed their disgust at the company's
decision on Twitter and Facebook, with many comparing
it to making light of crimes committed by notorious
'Beast of Blenheim' rapist Stewart Murray Wilson.
Teressa Rooney accused Hell Pizza of using sexual assault
as a "jolly laugh" to sell its products. "Disgusting and
evil," she said. Others called the post a "new low".
Hell Pizza responded by removing the original Facebook
post and replacing it with a message explaining it thought
the winning entry was "in the spirit of a prank between
mates". It offered to donate $10,000 to Wellington
Rape Crisis, which has been forced to cut its services
by 20 per cent because of a funding crisis which has
left a $55,000 shortfall in its 2012/13 budget. The
company would also match every donation made at the
agency's fundraising page dollar for dollar until the
end of the month. Wellington Rape Crisis manager Natalie
Gousmett this afternoon confirmed her organisation was
accepting the offer on the condition Hell senior executives,
managers and staff going through sexual violence awareness
and ethical bystander training run by her agency.
Ms Gousmett said she was disappointed at having to accept
the donation, rather than relying on guaranteed funding.
"They've made a mistake in a way that treats sexual violence
as a joke. I feel as an agency that works with survivors
of sexual violence it's really troubling for us to be in
this position of having to decide whether to have to accept
money from a person who's done something like this when we
should have consistent Government funding." In a post on
Facebook, Hell blamed a social media manager for its
original post. It said the post was not approved by Hell
owners and co-founders Callum Davies or Stu McMullin.
"We unreservedly apologise for this comment and have taken
steps to stop it from reoccurring. Sexual assault is no
joke and we would like to use the massive level of discussion
on this to highlight the need of Wellington Rape Crisis."
Wellington Rape Crisis has been providing support services
to rape victims for 35 years. It faced funding problems
after its client list grew from 543 in 2010/11 to 995
in 2011/12. It's not the first time Hell Pizza has
apologised for its marketing decisions. The company said
sorry after including the message "You will marry a
transgender" in its "misfortune" cookies last December.
In 2011, Hell was accused of "spiritual abuse" for
putting up a billboard showing a bun decorated with an
inverted pentacle symbol and the words: "For a limited
time. A bit like Jesus." A 2006 campaign where condoms
were randomly mailed out prompted a record 685 complaints
to the Advertising Standards Authority. The complaints

Hell Pizza International is owned by Warren Powell,
Callum Davies and Stu McMullin.
In 2006, Hell sold the New Zealand Master Franchise
rights to Tasman Pacific Foods (the NZ master franchisee
for Burger King) for NZ$15,000,000 and aimed to expand
to the UK. The NZ Master Franchise rights were purchased
back from Tasman Pacific Foods in 2009.
There are currently 65 stores nationwide in New Zealand.
Since arriving to the UK in 2006, Hell have opened a pilot
store in Fulham, as well as two franchisee operated stores
in Clapham and Shepherds Bush, all in London. Australia has
opened two stores in South-east Queensland. Hell also opened
its first stores in Dublin, Ireland, and Vancouver, Canada,
in 2009 and in India in 2010.
In 2009 Hells Pizza owner Warren Powell verbally pledged to
pay all proceeds from a Hell takeaway van at the Big Night
In Telethon to the charity KidsCan, amounting to about
NZ$10,000. Julie Nelson, chief executive of the charity,
said "after seeing reports that some of the money raised
was failing to reach needy children, Powell reneged on the
deal." On 14 August 2011, the Hell Pizza Facebook page
stated "We can confirm that we have now contributed $10,000
to the KidsCan Charitable Trust."
In July 2010 after hackers attacked the Hell Pizza customer
database 230,000 customers were advised to change their
The Hell theme is used in the menu; the pizzas are named
after the seven deadly sins.
The company is notable for its humorous advertising and for
being the first company in New Zealand to offer online
pizza ordering, in 1996.
Their logo, and their pizzas, are used on the Sporting
Hell segment on the television show Pulp Sport.

Hell Pizza condom advertisements: complaints upheld
On 31 October 2006 Hell announced through a press release
it would be promoting its "Lust" pizza by distributing
170,000 branded condoms. They said that "while the primary
aim of the campaign is to promote our LUST pizza, let's
not forget that promoting the use of condoms has important
public benefits such as sexual education, the prevention
of pregnancy and the prevention of sexually transmitted
Within days, groups such as Family Life International,
Focus on the Family and the Catholic Church had lodged
complaints with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
The Family First Lobby said Hell has "crossed the line of
what is decent and acceptable advertising material to be
put in letterboxes of families". In addition there were
complaints that the packaging contained "explicit
instructions", though these are the typical instructions
that come with condoms.
MOCKING OF CHRISTIANITY
Mocking of Christianity
A radio advertisement that featured a humorous conversation
about Hell was felt to be mocking of Christianity and deemed
offensive. The ASA ruled that there were no grounds to take
any action on the complaint since "it did not reach the
threshold to be likely to cause serious or widespread
"SELLING YOUR SOUL"
The expression "sell your soul" was used in flyers, the
company website and in television and radio advertising.
It attracted a complaint to the ASA on the grounds of
being "This flippant attitude towards something that
many New Zealand citizens ... believed to be significant
and consequential..." The ASA ruled that there were no
grounds to proceed about the complaint since it is a
common saying and recognised to be dark and satirical.
Hell also purchased the soul of a 24-year-old Wanganui
man for $5001, after the online auction website Trademe
withdrew his attempt to sell it there.
HALLOWEEN DEAD CELEBRITIES
In November 2008, while under management from Tasman Foods,
Hell Pizza New Zealand apologised for an advertisement
featuring skeletal remains of Sir Edmund Hillary,
Heath Ledger, and the Queen Mother, dancing on gravestones.
The apology was to Hillary's family, which complained the
ad was in "extremely poor taste". The ad was withdrawn
from the company website on 3 November.
